Alameda,
Calif.–November 1, 2004–Wind River Systems, Inc.
(NASDAQ: WIND), the global leader in device software
optimization (DSO), today announced the general
availability of Wind River’s next generation Wind
River Workbench 2.2, an Eclipse-based development
suite that supports the entire device software
development lifecycle, from hardware bring-up to
manufacturing. It is the only development suite that
offers support for the most widely distributed
device software operating systems, VxWorks and
Linux, as well as in-house operating systems. With
Wind River Workbench, companies can standardize on
one common development suite across the enterprise,
optimizing the development process across multiple
projects and sites.
Today,
organizations have multiple device development teams
in different geographic locations that focus on
specific development phases. For each phase,
developers may use different processes, tools and
vendors that are completely different from other
teams working on the same project. With this lack of
standardization and collaboration, efficiency is
diminished.
By
integrating industry-leading development
technologies such as powerful source code analysis,
JTAG based on-chip debugging and operating system
aware and task level debugging into one common
development suite, Wind River Workbench provides
device developers with the technology capabilities
required to complete their specific task quickly and
effectively. Additionally, as it supports each phase
of device development, Workbench enables
organizations to streamline collaboration between
developers, thereby increasing productivity across
the development lifecycle.
"Device
software projects are often slowed due to
incompatible tools and complex processes unique to
distinct development phases. This hamstrings the
ability to swiftly bring quality products to
market," said Dana Gardner, senior analyst at The
Yankee Group. "By moving toward an inclusive and
standardized end-to-end development and deployment
efficiency solution¾the core premise of device
software optimization¾companies can radically
improve their device software development results."
Wind River
Workbench provides:
-
Standardization across the enterprise —
increased developer productivity, improved
project team collaboration, resulting in greater
expertise, reuse and resource flexibility
-
Breadth of availability — the first and only
cross-platform IDE to support VxWorks, Linux and
other in-house operating systems
-
Depth
of capability — best-in-class code composition,
comprehension, construction, debugging and
integration capability in a single environment.
Support for multiple OSes, CPUs, architectures
and connections
-
Extensible Eclipse 3.0 framework — supports
hundreds of plug-ins. Seamless integration with
third-party and in-house tools for customization
and scalability
"Through
our long-standing, strategic relationship, Freescale
and Wind River provide customers with broad silicon
and software support," said Mike Shoemake,
PowerQUICC marketing director for Freescale's
Networking and Communications Systems Division.
"With the new Wind River Workbench, we are able to
provide our customers using VxWorks and Linux OC-
based PowerQUICC communications processors with the
end-to-end support they require to make
next-generation system development more efficient."
“Companies
are demanding a development environment that
supports multiple projects, target platforms and
languages. They also want to gain efficiencies by
using that same environment throughout the
development process,” said John Bruggeman, chief
marketing officer for Wind River. “Wind River
Workbench is poised to become the de-facto standard
for OS-independent device software development.”
Wind River
will also host a series of developer conferences
around the world, beginning November 9, 2004. The
conferences will showcase Wind River’s core product
lines--Workbench, General Purpose Platform and
Market Specific Platforms--and provide developers
with hands-on access to the technology. For more
